I stopped the car and the ignition would not go off, key would not come out easily. After strugling for a while the key came out but the iginition was still on and the indicator said ignition is on. When I tried to put the key back in, I had trouble putting key in ignition. I turned key and car was dead. Battery checked out ok. Do I need to replace the steering lock and do I need to tow the vehichle to a repair shop or can this be repaired without being towed to the shop.

Earlier suggested solution on this forum seems to be applicable to this problem as well

Replacement of part #2 in this link: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=HD63&mospid=47404&btnr=32_0906&hg=32&fg=30

But wanted to know if the car needs to be towed or can be repaired where it is parked now.

Hi there,

This can be done in place but the bolts that hold the lock in place will have to be drilled out as they are tamper proof that is the heads snap off when they are done up, so you will needs power for a drill or a battery drill to remove the attaching bolts.

Mark is correct. However I like to back the screws out with a sharp chisel, it's less stressful.

I should of been a bit clearer, I would be using an easy out or the fine point chisel as the good Dr says.
