1993 BMW 525 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic unknow miles

The multifunction display is nuts. It only once displayed the correct information since I bought it 2 weeks ago. The previous owner replaced the alternator. I get dashes, letters, symbols, lines arrows, but no useful information. It is not even on most of the time. It does what it wants to most of the time. The initial check does not work, for languages, etc. Neither one of the buttons does anything. All gauges work properly. This is the speedo with the removal mileage plug.

The matrix will require replacement and as far as I know there isn't anyone who fixes them as I write this.

What is a the matrix. Is this the whole instrument cluster or some section of it?

The matrix is the display field and yes, the instrument cluster will require replacement as a whole.

How do I know it is that and not the CCM or some other module? I have the Bentley Manual and the wiring schematics, which leave a lot to be desired. Are there inputs to be checked before I spend the money on the instrument panel? Or are you fairly sure the Instrument panel is the issue?
