I have a German Spec 525i Touring with a bit of a problem. When I connect the Mass Airflow Sensor, the vehicle doesn't run. Without it connected, the vehicle runs fine, although when it is warmed up it seems to idle a little rough.
I have tried swapping out the MAS with another one (same part number, from a friends car) and seen the same behavior. We also tried swapping the ECM, again with no change. (His car ran fine with both parts from my car, BTW.) No error code is generated, so I don't get a check engine light and we did try and hook the car up to a computer, but the computer couldn't understand my car.
In the morning, I do see white smoke on acceleration (but it is cold here right now.) Drivability appears to be fine. The car does have a very slow oil leak that appears to be coming from the valve cover seal.
When I bought the car, it did have some electrical problems. We were able to track a large power drain to the Integrated Climate Control Module located against the firewall between the driver and passenger side foot wells. During the time we were tracking the power drain, the problem first manifest itself. At first, if the MAS was hooked in, the car wouldn't idle for the first 5 minutes or so, but was fine after that. Now, if the MAS is connected, the car will not idle at all, even if it is allowed to warm up (with or without driving.)
So what does this problem really mean for the car's performance and what is most likely wrong with the vehicle? Lastly, how can it be repaired?
