The VIN is the 17 digit number that is located on the "b" pillar at the drivers door or on a plate that is visible through the windshield. The light may be on due to a plausibility issue or a fault in a sensor or for an emission problem. A scan of the car with the BMW proprietary software should reveal the fault.

I got a guy with the diagnostic scanner to have a look,
there were hundreds of faults registered!
He was able to reset the light and all seems ok now.
He says it may have had a low battery at some point.
Hope this might help someone else with a similar problem.

The issue with most of the faults with todays BMW cars is that they are excessively dependent on computers and the electronics that require steady voltage. You get a spike or a voltage excursion and it sets faults. And the only way to know for sure is to scan for faults and be able to correctly interpret them.
