The extraction of generic OBDII fault codes from BMW cars can be a bit tricky as they do not always take the repairing technician to the problem that actually generated the fault in the first place. There might be a service bulletin from BMW regarding this problem and it can help the diagnostic process if the car is scanned with the proprietary BMW software. There are also the basic reasons like an air leak in the intake manifold or the rubber boot from the air mass sensor to to the throttle body has a crack in it or one of the pre-cat O2 sensors has a lean bias and requires replacement.
