2 mechanics gave told me engine is history. Driven dry thermostat apparently broken and didn't register overheat and coolant gone. Quoted 4500 for used engine replacement and new rad and thermostat. Another one says I should rebuild not replace. My wife thinks I'm throwing good money after bad. We just painted car 2 months ago. And she is worried we will have to potentially have big repair again. She thinks it's time to call it a day. I don't know what to do. Any help appreciated.

I think this will require looking at where you stand with the car financially, replacement of the car or repairing it. As much as I like BMW, I strongly believe you should not form any emotional attachment to a mechanical contrivance. If it is emotional, then you will possibly be disappointed. Sometimes it is best to cut your losses.
