Occassionally, when the car is in reverse it will not move. It is nonresponsive, as if it is in neutral. This is happening more frequently. Is the transmission going out, or is something else a problem? Thank you for your insight.

No reverse could mean the transmission is going to lose reverse at some time, probably when you need reverse. The car is a four door, right?

Yes your tranny is on the way out. It is a common problem for the e46 328's.
