I have been told the differential on my car is oozing oil. There has never been any oil on the garage floor. It is an expensive repair and I wonder whether I can leave it go and just check the level from time to time. The oil has never been changed and I am thinking of doing it now. What type and weight would you recommend?

Checking it from time to time is good, I would say that oil leakage is not a big deal if there isnt any on the floor, monitor it and see what happens. Most commercially available gear oils are fine, go with 75w/90 GL-1 or better and you'll be good to go.
