When I put the key in the ignition and turn to start the engine, the key just spins around. It started fine previously is there a simple solution to this or do I need to get it towed? Can any qualified mechanic do this repair or should I take it to an experienced BMW mechanic?

The internal locking mechanism in the steering column is broken and is going to need to be replaced, the job is about 2 hours for an experienced BMW tech.
