Is leaking from a valve cover gasket?

Two months ago I noticed a few droplets of oil on my garage floor. I had a used BMW mechanic put it on a lift and we found where it is leaking from a valve cover gasket. He told me not to worry about it at this time that he had seen alot worse and it would be extremely expensive to repair. I have noticed the droplets are looking like quarter diameter puddles of oil. What do I do? My low oil warning lamp has not come on yet. Do I keep driving it and put oil in as I need to until I can afford the gasket replacement? Or, do I need to address the problem immediately? Thanks for your input.

Hello,

First of all you need to make sure that the oil is at the correct level by regularly checking it. Do not wait until the low oil light comes on.
I have attached the oil level checking procedure for your BMW (look below).

As for the valve cover gasket replacement, it should be replaced as soon as you are able to. It is not ideal to let a leak go on for extended period of time. As that can lead to other issues.

Replacing the valve cover gasket is not terribly difficult. It can be done in few hours, depending on your comfort level.

I have included the valve cover gasket replacement procedure for your reference.

Please let me know of any questions.
Thank you.
