2002 BMW 325 lower steering column u-joint is worn causing

I was told that to replace part would cost $425. Is this
something that I can live with and not cause damage if
I do nothing?

It will not fail in a catastrophic fashion, it will however not get any better. I would consider replacement for your safety. It alone is worth more than $425 not to mention peace of mind.
