1993 BMW 325 temp gauge erratic

My temp (dial) gauge is erratic . It sometimes read half and then would indicate an overheat and bring on the red light then goes back to read half again. It bounces back and forth from half to overheat. Is this an indication of a bad temp sender and where is this located? Tx.

I think you are correct. Go to Realoem.com for the part and the exploded view that will show you where it goes. (Just behind the oil filter housing, in the cylinder head)
