I bought a peake reset tool for my bmw. I follow all of the steps for reading fault codes but when it is set to read fault codes I get nothing what is preventing it from communicating with my ECU?

The reset tool communicates with the instrument cluster, not with the ECU (what is an ECU?)

ECU stands for electronic control unit. So does that mean that there is a problem with my instrument cluster? I thought the ECU stored the fault codes and that the peake tool retrived them?
