When applying the brakes a distinct "clunk" noise is heard as though something is shifting, but this happens only the first time the brakes are applied in a given direction. Example: while backing up, the clunk occurs the first time the brakes are applied (even gently). Subsequent braking while moving backwards do not produce the noise. Go forward and the first time only that the brakes are applied the clunk occurs. I have checked all of the caliper, rotor and wheel bolts for tightness - cannot find anything loose. Haven't been able to isolate where exactly the noise is coming from. This car has 4-wheel disc brakes. The pads all look acceptable material-wise. The rotors will need to be turned next time but are not too bad. Would appreciate any ideas/suggestions. Thank you.

Noises can be notoriously difficult to diagnose from cyberspace. If you have inspected the brakes and are COMPLETELY satisfied with said inspection then I would think the next thing to do would be to isolate the source with someone else assisting you, like let them drive the car in a parking lot or where it is safe and you stand outside the car and listen for the origin of this sound. Keep in touch and let us know mate! ♥
