Electrical problem
1987 BMW 325 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Manual

Car was being driven at highway speed, slowed to exit, about halfway down the ramp the engine quit just like the key was turned off. Coasted into gas station parking lot, check for spark - none. Engine cranks fine - sounds fine, not like a timing belt broken - but no spark. I am a mechanic but have no experience with BMW. Car belongs to a relative, just trying to help them out. If you could give me a place to start, I would appreciate it. Thank you.

I think it could be the crank sensor(rpm sensor), if its a 2.7 then its on the transmission bell housing along with the cylinder identification sensor. If its a 2.5 then its in the front by the crankshaft pulley and both rpm and cylinder identification sensors are in one. Check for physical damage to the sensors or if you can for output signals at the connector wich is near the intake manifold, using a multimeter or wave scanner. Also dont forget to check for voltage to the coil positive side if you have a led test light then you can also check for the grounding signal from the ecm at the negative side. Also make sure that the spark isnt present at the coil to dist. Wire to eliminate the chance of cap and rotor ect.
