After the engine has been running in neutral for about 30-45 seconds, the engine revs from about 500 RPMs up to 1000-1250 RPMs over and over again. This also happens in first gear. Iv'e been told that it might be the air idle sensor, but I honestly don't have a clue... Thanks a lot for any help you can offer.

It is usually them idle control valve/idle control unit that causes the issue you have reported, check this link: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=1554&mospid=47321&btnr=13_0228&hg=13&fg=15 #13
