I know BMW recomends replacing pads & rotors at the same time but is that really necessary? My rotors don't have any scaring or grooves other than normal wear at the outside edge of pads and appear fine. The dealership estimates $1200+, I know BMW brakes are the best but that is excessive and in trying to save a buck will it just cost more later or is replacing just pads acceptable?

if the rotors are within tolerance it is acceptable, however, you may wish to consider what the brakes are called on to do, and what you are paying for is some peace of mind, and it's hard to put a price on that.
