1999 BMW 323 Console Shift Indication is faulty

Dash indication of transmission position is correct; however, the console orange indicator and light are random and not indicating the correct transmission shift position. How do I remove and repair this console shift indication?

Pull straight up on the shift plate surround and look into the possibility the plate may need adjustment or replacement.
