Engine Cooling problem
2002 BMW 318 Manual 63000 miles

Temp gauge on my bmw goes to red them comes back down , sometimes immedietly, sometimes after a few mins. Got into car in morning and turned the key and the gauge went straight to red after car had been off all night! went back to normal temp again quickly. happens most when driving in town, drove 40miles or so on motorway and gauge stayed in normal range the whole time.

Replace the temperature sender and see what happens.
