1999 BMW 318 Petrol Engine sounding like a diesel

1999 BMW 318 Manual 126760 miles

The oil light came on and went off while driving, after few minutes the car lost driving power and the engine cut off, did not want to start again. We serviced the car, replaced the oil (it was dirty and sticky) and replaced the oil filter, then the car started again but sounded like a diesel engine even though its a petrol. What can be the cause?

Could be the cam chain tensioner, changing the oil on a regular basis is suggested.
