Took our bmw to our local mechanic replaced thermastat, water pump, radiator, cooling system bled properly. He believes it is a blown head gasket and says that you have tear into the motor before you tell if it is cracked or completely blown. Is this true? Generally how much does it cost to repair or replace head gasket?

Yes that is correct, the head will have to be removed in order to see the gasket and inspect it for damage. While off, the head itself should also be magnafluxed for cracks. Estimate for replacing your vehicle's head gasket, including labor, is around $700.
