I put a new battey in my car, the old one was dead. I hooked the pos. Then the neg. When I did this the neg. Terminal started to smoke. I secured it down, turned the key and nothing. A bad body ground?

The wiring was smoking? That can't be good. Do you mean the cable to the battery was smoking just from installing the battery? Was the polarity correct? I am not sure I understand.
