Heater problem
1991 BMW 318 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Manual

Good morning,

I have a problem with my 1991 BMW 318is. The car keeps running hot and I have no heat inside. The radiator, thermostat, water pump have all been changed and are brand new. There is a flow coming from the radiotor and the hoses are working. But the hose connected to the engine for heat is ice coldand the car over heats. What could be wrong now. I dont know what else to do. I plan to keep the car it is in excellent condition please help.

If the cooling system is doing it's job then there is some sort of blockage inside the engine, like the steam holes are blocked in the head gasket.

OK Dr. Hagerty thanks I did not know about that. So How do I check that and how do I fix it? Does this mean a new head?

It doesn't mean a new head, it could be something simple. Do you know the cars history? Has the head ever been off? The M-42 motor is moderately easy to work on and if the mileage is high and you want reliability, then I would pull the head and have it inspected. The early M-42 motors had a profile gasket failure issue and if the head has never been off, this might be the time to get it done.
