The timing is adjusted by viewing the ball bearing that is embedded in the flywheel at 2000 RPM through the viewing port at the top of the block where it connects to the transmission. There should be a decal under hood that gives the timing specification in degrees BTC. With the timing light attached to cylinder #1, rev the engine to 2000 RPM and adjust the distributor to get the ball in the window with the vacuum advance disconnected.
