1979 BMW 318 transmition

1979 BMW 318 Automatic 200,00 miles

1979 bmw 318i, automatic transmission stopped functioning while driving (a slight, high pitch metallic sound preceded the breakdown). When I added 1 quart of the fluid it preformed normally.
Next time after about a mile (same sound again), breaks down again. Added half a quart of fluid and transmition returns to normal.
I am afraid to drive too far, could the transmission fluid filter blockage cause the malfunction?

The blockage is possible and you may well be correct in your diagnostic.
