my bmw 318i 1999 was on smoke while driveing on motorway now it wont drive probly the warning light comes on and it will drive fine do i need to change gear box or oil change

First, where was the smoke coming from? Has the check engine light come on?

i think it was from the trans that was smoking and no light was on at the time.
