got hot, works but blows white smoke through muffler.

This is consistent with coolant in the combustion chamber. you will need to get a head check done. this will determine if there is a head or gasket problem as a result or the over heating.

there is also coolant getting in the oil.

You defiantly have a cracked head or a blown head gasket. this will have to be looked at ASAP as more damage will be done if driven any distance.
