I have black smoke coming from my tail pipe when I put the accelerator down and the car is down on power.

Has this just happened or has it been developing over a period of time? Black smoke in the diesel is often an over fueling problem, you may have a leaking injector.

It has just happened I have removed the egr valve it is pretty clogged up so replacing it and see if that cures the problem

A blocked or badly restricted EGR can cause excessive smoke as it will upset the air/fuel ratio somewhat, so if it is clogged this is not a bad place to start and anyway it should be cleaned or replaced if defective or blocked regardless.
