My 4.0 belt all the sudden started jumping one notch only on the harmonic balancer pulley, splitting the belt. I reset it and it jumps one tooth everytime I restart the engine. Replaced idler pulley and power steering to no avail. Any ideas?

Bad belts and tensioners will do this recommended replacement is 60k for belt and tensioner. Check for worn grooves in balancer or sharp pieces there but soundls like you need a bet/tensioner

Groves on all pulleys are perfect. And there is no tensioner on 1987 jeep Cherokee adjustments are made with power steering pump. Any other ideas?

Try a newbelt and use a belt tension gauge to adjust it. Check alignment with a straight edge aswell.
