My car had shut off last week driving down the road. Husband came jump started it drove home. Drove kids to school next morning shut off again. Jumped off drove home and parked for a couple of days. Then tried starting it and would not crank over. Had dead cell in battery so I replaced it. My car has ran fine and have drove it 170 miles. If it was my alternator would it still be running or could it just have been the battery?

On a new battery it could go that long but we could just test the alternator to find out if this is okay.

Even though it is possible, I doubt that you would make it this far if the alternator was not operating. The only way I can see this happening is if the alternator was partially operating which again will show itself on a test like this.

The battery and alternator are two separate animals.

Either one can go bad, or even new ones can be defective, this goes for any part (so never exclude the possibility that the "new" stuff did/ or should have fixed your problem).

Most likely you did fix your problem with the new battery.

Want to be absolutely sure?

You can obtain a cheap, but great ($5.00) digital voltmeter at "Harbor Freight" or at auto part stores for a bit more.

This is a tool in which you can use for your car or home for many, many tests, it's not a one time user! See You tube.

For now, I got you a "Repair Guide" from the top right of our pages, here it is:

This will explain and show you how to test your alternator.

Return here and let us know your results.
