My battery was hooked up backwards just long enough to get a jolt of sparks. And it started right up but since then something is draining the battery, and it won't stay running for long. I took off cables while running to check the alternator and it still ran. So, I don't think it's the alternator. What do I check next?

It sounds like the battery is bad, I would remove it and take it to the auto parts store where they will test it for free. Also, this guide may help you:

When the engine is running is the battery warning light on?
