It's highly unusual for the airbags to deploy without a signal from one of the impact/crash sensors. What was taking place with the vehicle when they deployed? Many times when airbags deploy, the airbag control module is left in a state that requires it be replaced along with the bags. It's possible if the module is not replaced that it may be causing a battery draw.
