Torque converter replacement?

I was told by my local transmission shop that my torque converter is bad along with the fluid being contaminated and burnt. Had some shifting and acceleration issues that's why the visit to the shop. Was quoted $5,000 for a new transmission installation and $4,500 for a rebuilt replacement. Wondering if that's what's actually needed or can the converter just be changed along with the fluid and filter. Don't deal with transmissions very often so I just want another opinion.

Hi,

Without being there, that is a tough question to answer. How dirty is the fluid and what has led them to determine the converter isn't the only problem?

If the transmission fluid is dark in color or has a burnt smell to it, that could indicate the clutches in the trans have failed, but there is no guarantee of it.

When you took it to them, was it slipping badly? Did you check the fluid to see its condition?
