A/C is on vents blow hot air?

When the A/C is on vents blow hot air on the driver's side and cold out of vent on passenger. I was told it was a bad blend door actuator. Where is it located and how to change it out. I had the freon tested it was all good.

Hi,

From what I am reading, if you have dual climate control, then the system must also be automatic climate control. So, that is what I used for the directions below.

Pic 1 shows the locations. The L and R are left and right sides. Left is the driver's side and the area of concern.

The remaining pictures are the directions for replacing it. Note: Pic 3 shows the section of floor duct that will need removed.

Hi,

No problem whatsoever. However, this creates a new problem. Although it isn't dual climate, do you still get one side hot and the other cold? If that is the case, it sounds like something with the duct work has come apart. The cold air comes from the same place, the evaporator under the dash. If one is hot and one side is cold, something other than the blend air door is happening.

Let me know. Also, let me know if the cold side changes to warm if you turn the heater on.

Yes, the driver side is warm air, and the passenger side is cold air when the A/C is on. When I change to heater, both sides are warm.

Hi,

That is interesting. It sounds like the blend door motor is working. If you look at the pics above, you will see where I put L and R on two of them. Remove the one that shows R and see if there is anything preventing the door itself from fully moving.

Since you still have air blowing out from the driver's side, it doesn't sound like the duct work is disconnected.

I removed the air duct and operated the A/C. Changed it to heat & all of the levers on all of the actuators seem to be opening completely. Could the ac compressor be going out?

It's unlikely the compressor is the issue. I'm going to mention this to the site owner. He is excellent with A/C. Let's see if he has a suggestion.

Also, just to reconfirm, this doesn't have dual climate control, correct?

I would re-check the refrigerant level because if it is a little low it can cause the system not to work correctly, here is a video to help you:

I put a gauge to the low end, it’s in the green. I also put a food thermometer into 1 passenger vent (79F on max A/C) and 1 driver side vent (89F on max A/C) that’s after letting car run for a while too. The A/C compressor kicks on, but there is never any water from the A/C dripping onto the ground. I added a video of the gauge and pics of the temperature of vents. The 1st is the video. The car has new cabin filter and filter under the hood is new too.

When the A/C system is on for a couple of minutes, grasp the large refrigerant tube coming at the firewall it should be cold. Here is where you should check. Also did you swap out the temperature blend door actuator? Check out the images (below). Let us know how it goes.

I did not swap out the doors. They all seemed to be opening completely when I removed the air duct. All of the levers on all actuators seem to be moving completely without any issues.

There is the problem, you will need to check the high side pressure of the system to determine if the expansion valve or compressor is bad.

You can rent the gauge set from the auto parts store for cheap.

Hooked some gauges up and the low side is in range, but high side is running low. It was around 91f outside.

Yep, you have found the problem, either the expansion valve is bad or the compressor, this is why most repair shops replace them both at the same time. You can try the expansion valve first, but I think it is the compressor that is bad. Here is how to change it out. Check out the images (below). Please let us know what happens.

I ended up changing out the condenser too. It ended up being not too bad. I had easy access to the compressor changing the condenser out. Flushed the lines out. I followed your video on pulling a vacuum & charging the system up. The temperature is around 53/54f coming out of the vents on 110f degree day at
Idle. Thank you for all of the advice and great videos!
