Creaky clicking when turning flat, are the boots bad? How can I tell? How long before something bad happens, does my car have upper ball joints too?

The best way is to carefully put your hand on the joint while someone turns the wheel for you and see if a vibration transmits through your fingers. Make sure you do not get your fingers caught in anything when the wheels turn.
