Backfiring

My truck is backfiring through the carburetor and the exhaust and I can hear an air leak

How long since a tune-up? Any applicable trouble codes? If your check engine lamp/mil still works, you should be able to get some codes by using a jumper wire at the A an B terminals at the data link connector. Then turn key just till the dash lamps come on, then the mil starts flashing, you count the flashes to get the codes, your looking for two digit codes, if there are any.
The backfiring may be valves or timing issue. Sometimes an exhaust leak may cause backfire. Just my opinion.
