Backfiring

When starting the car would back fire. I went through 3 starters. I'm in the fourth started but I think that I must have damaged the teeth on the flywheel.
I was told that could be that the timing chain has stretched.
How can I determine what is causing the back firing.
Right now I have a new starter but it just spins and doesn't engage the flywheel.
Thank you for any suggestions.

You need to check the valve timing, this will show up any chain problem and remove the starter to inspect for damaged teeth on the ring gear, if these have been damaged the transmission will have to be removed to fit a new flex plate.
