Just got truck and it is sputtering and backfiring. Checked the oil and it smelled like fuel. It is definitely burning rich. Where should I start to correct this issue?

Good morning.

I would start with basics. Change the ignition components. Spark plugs, wires, cap and rotor. Backfiring comes from spark at the wrong time. Most of the time it is related to tune up components.

Is the check engine light on?

If you can, I would also check the fuel pressure.
