I have a 99 audi a6 2.8L 30V with 100k miles on it.
2 symptoms suddenly appeared.

1) there is a whine that comes and goes from somewhere in the back of the car.

2) when i try to fill the car up, i get about 5 gallons in the tank, and it cuts off, with some air and fuell spraying back out of the nozzle.

Are these related? Is there a simple fix?

any thoughts would be appreciated

You need to the have Evaporative system check, Could be a problem with the purging solenoid, charcoal canister, plugged vent lines and liquid/vapor seperator-Your system is not being purge it has excessive pressure. Could be very well be your gas cap.
