Hello,
There are several reason for an engine to overheat.

First of all you need to make sure the coolant level is correct.
If the engine overheats with the correct level of coolant, it can be for a faulty water pump, a stuck closed thermostat, bad radiator, inoperative radiator fan or could be from a clog in the cooling system.
With the engine running at operating temperature check to see if the cooling fans are coming on.

A stuck thermostat can overheat an engine in a short period of time. Check for noticeable temperature difference between the upper and lower radiator hose. A stuck thermostat will prevent coolant from flowing and you will have one of the hose significantly warm and over one relatively cool.

A defective water pump will not circulate the coolant thru the engine properly and will over heat the engine.

Please let me know of any questions.
Thank you.
