2003 Audi A4 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 88 000 miles

My oil light went on today so I pulled over at a gas station to find my oil bone dry. Is this normal or potentially a larger problem?

Way not normal. When was last change? any leaks? smoke from exhaust? How often do you check oil?
