Arcing and smoking at the negative battery terminal?

Replaced the starter solenoid then connected the negative terminal last. Ignition was then turned on and got one click and shut the ignition off. Checked under the hood and the negative terminal was smoking, removed neg cable off and it arc welded, touched negative again and still arcs and sparks.

It sounds like the starter wiring is not correct or touching the block or ground somehow. If you can upload an image if the starter solenoid wiring, I can check it out for you, also it could be a defective starter motor. Here is the correct way to install the starter in case you need it. Check out the images (below). Please upload pictures or videos in your response of any problems so we can see what to help you with.
