red wire to small post on solenoid that is hot when key is on gets hot at terminal onsolenoid and voltage drops way off at coil post when u try to start it it will have one good spark as u start to turn engine over and again just as u release key if u disconnect the dist at plug in u have full voltage not distributor

Ed, It sounds like the solenoid may be shorted internally. The red wire should only be hot while cranking. Dog
