6.4 powerstroke single alternator plug burnt and I don't know the color order to wire in the new pigtail.

I have a 6.0L diesel. I'm not getting a charge to the batteries until the engine compartment warms up. the cooler the day the longer I run with the no-charge light on. Does this sound like the altenator or a wiring issue? How can I make the determination before spending $400 on a replacment altenator?

Have your batteries load tested first, they are usually more sensitive to heat.Be sure all connections are clean and tight. This system is pretty staright forward, no controllers or anything.Check fuse 45 behind the dash to be sure it is getting a good connection. Also check fusible links C,D,E to be sure they are good.If all is ok, it may just need the alt, put a meter on it when the light is on to see what it is putting out
