That is the worst way to test it, similar to removing your heart so the doctor can watch it twitch.
The generator is part of the entire charging system, and you want to test the complete system. Run the engine, then measure the battery voltage. It must be between 13.75 and 14.75 volts. That test takes just a couple of seconds. If the voltage is okay, that means it is okay to perform the rest of the tests, but that requires a professional load tester. Specifically, I want to know "full-load output current" and "ripple voltage". Those tests take just a minute or two, but if you're having an intermittent problem, it is necessary to do those tests while the problem is occurring.
