HI all

I have replaced a sized alternator on my 1999 Smart but following replacement the battery is not charging and the red battery light is on all the time.

Having checked the voltage across the battery when the car is running it definatly not getting a charge.

The old sized alternator had a plastic molded rear with space for 3 terminals but only 2 of these spaces had a terminal and only the far left one (bigger terminal) had a wire connected to it (the other had no connection at all). All was fine with the charging system until the unit sized.

I got a new unit what is exactly the same as the old unit apart from on the old unit were there is a space for that 3rd terminal this new unit had one. Anyway I fitted the new unit and connected its one connection to the same terminal as the old unit but now have no charging.

Thinking that maybe in dropping the engine to replace the old unit the 2nd terminal may have snapped off I have dropped the engine again in search of any wiring I have missed but there is none at all.

Does anyone no of the correct connections.
Should there be more than one wire connected
Why 2 terminals on the old unit and 3 on the new.
If more than one connection is needed them were do the other connection/s go - anyone got a schematic

Help appreciated.

We are not trying to avoid you, but our reference materials that we get to draw from do not cover that vehicle. I suspect that you will need to attach a second wire to one of the two and connect that way. Basically still the two wires. Can you communicate at all with the manufacturer of the new alternator?
