98 ranger driveshaft question

this might sound like a dumb question but what is the round cylinder that is on the driveshaft it's between the transmission tail and the driveshaft.and will it be alright to remove becouse it has broken loose.

Not sure I follow you. Is the driveshaft disconnected from the trans? Sounds like you broke a U joint. The yoke has a splined cylinder that slides into the tail of the tranny. Remove it and unbolt the driveshaft from the rear end. Have a new u-joint installed and reinstall the drive shaft, front first.

it's not the u-joint, it's some kind of safty device i think.but it's bugging the hell out of me becouse it rattles and sometimes it gets caught up around my driveshaft and makes my truck shake going down the road.
