96 Contour that wont Move in reverse. AT ALL!

I just picked up a 96 Contour that I was told the tranny was toast. I tried to push in back from the spot it was in to get it on the trailer and couldnt get it to move for NOTHING!
I had to jack up the front with a floor jack and push it back on the jack. I got it home and got a battery in it and fired it up and found that it drives just fine in drive but nothing in reverse. Its almost like your power brakeing it in reverse. It wont drive or push this way. Its a automatic trans and a 4 cyl eng with 143k miles on it. I have seen several tranny's go out but not freeze up in reverse like this. Can anyone shine some light on this? Is it toast or something Im missing. Even if its toast can you please tell me what might have happened. I have to know now reguardless if its bad or not. Lol
Also, I have seen the parking paw break in one automatic trans before and it wouldnt go in reverse either but when you drove forward, you heard a clicking sound from it hitting the slots in the tranny. This one doesnt make any odd noise in drive or reverse.
