94 Grand Prix, 3.1, w/105,000 miles. I recently noticed a loud noise coming from the lower front of my Grand Prix. It sounds like a loud rapid rattling, almost as if a something was banging around inside a the flywheel cover. The transmission (4spd auto) was gone thru 30K miles ago and has been serviced annually since. When I got the car home I checked the trans. fluid level and found it quite low. Filling it has done nothing to fix the noise. The problem seems to mainly occur when the car is in 3rd gear or has a load on it, such as pulling a hill, 2500-3000 rpms. It seems to be fine in 2nd or 4th. Also, the car has no driveability issues or shift problems. I recently had a new catalytic converter installed too.

I know this is not a belt tensioner or CV joint issue, just not sure what it could be. I was wondering if a possible exhaust leak or maybe damage to the torque converter, or trans. pump would cause this. This noise is really loud when it occurs and is starting to sound expensive. Any ideas?

Could be a cracked flywheel or torque converter that is coming apart. Need to find out before anything becomes damaged further
