My 89 ranger did the same thing, where the shifter enters the transmission, there are two pins pressed in the side of the tower that fit into slots cut into the pivot of the shifter. One fell out and then there wasn't any fulcrum point for the shifter to pivot on to be able to change gears. Take the shift lever out to inspect these pins
